On Tuesday, June 14, 2005 (Day 4), we arrived in Livorno.
Italy. The excursion we chose was Florence and Pisa On Your
Own.
We woke up to rain but we were hopeful that it would stop since the weather forecast called for it to be just partly cloudy. We travelled for about a hour and a half to Florence via a tour bus where we spent most of the day. We first stood in line in the rain to get into the Duomo (Cathedral) which was extremely beautiful from the inside and out. We spent just enough time inside to allow the rain to stop. After the Duomo we walked around the narrow streets of Florence until we found the Bell Tower, the statue-filled Piazza della Signoria where we got to see the replica of Michaelangelo's David, and then Santa Croce.
In the later part of the afternoon, we met back up with
the group and travelled to Pisa. Of course the rain started
again on our journey there but luckily once we arrived in
Pisa the rain stopped! We saw the main attraction, the Leaning
Tower of Pisa which was an incredible site to see.
